Exquisite antique Victorian women’s sash buckle, circa 1880–1910, featuring a striking combination of black japanned metal and gilt ormolu detailing. This elegant rectangular buckle was designed for a woman’s sash or ribbon belt — not a heavy leather belt — and would have been worn at the waist over a gown or bodice, often as part of mourning or evening attire. Details: • Era: Victorian to early Edwardian (circa 1880–1910) • Gender: Women’s • Material: Japanned and gilt ormolu metal • Color: Black and gold • Dimensions: 1 15/16” x 1 11/16” • Condition: Excellent antique condition with one very small nick on edge (see close-up photo). • Features: • Rope-style gilt edging • Japanned black surface with glossy sheen • Ornate filigree prong mounts • Fully metal construction (non-magnetic, no plastic or celluloid) Pieces like this were popular during the Victorian mourning period, when black enamel or japanned finishes were paired with gold ornamentation for subtle elegance. These buckles were commonly worn by women as decorative sashes or bodice accents.
