description
Harper Donelson Sheppard entered into a financial partnership with C.N. Myers, and together they established the Hanover Shoe on December 26, 1899, with a common vision: sell the best shoes possible for one price, $2.50 a pair, and eliminate the middle-man by selling directly to the public. They opened their first store in York in June
Hanover Shoe Company was founded in Hanover Pennsylvania in 1899 and produced quality, Goodyear welted shoes from its factories until 1996. Twenty years after Hanover ended the production of shoes in the USA, Hanover shoes are still sought after by men’s shoe enthusiasts
Hanover was one of the top shoe manufacturers in the USA and produced a wide range of men’s boots and shoes. Like many USA shoe manufacturers, Hanover produced a limited number of premium models using Horween Shell Cordovan leather
After Florsheim, Hanover is the most common vintage Shell Cordovan brand
The model identifier for Hanover shoes is a four-digit number. In the image below, 2168 is the model number.

On March 20, 1883, Jon Matzeliger received patent number 274,207 for his machine. The mechanism held a shoe on a last, pulled the leather down around the heel, set and drove in the nails, and then discharged the completed shoe. It had the capacity to produce 700 pairs of shoes a day—more than 10 times the amount typically produced by human hands.
